Omar Powell

Chapter President

Omar Powell is a dedicated inclusion advocate and leader within the insurance industry. Currently at Sompo, Omar began his career as an Underwriter in the Retail Property department at AIG, where he also served as the Programming Chair for the Black Professionals & Allies Employee Resource Group and contributed to the University Relations team. He has consistently leveraged his professional roles to stay connected with his university community and champion diversity and inclusion within the insurance sector.

During his undergraduate years, Omar served as President of the Gamma Iota Sigma chapter at Howard University, the international risk management, insurance, and actuarial science fraternity. On a national level, he established Gamma Iota Sigma’s center of expertise on diversity and inclusion, known as GammaS.A.I.D. (Solutions for Authenticity, Inclusion, & Diversity). In 2016, he presented at the Lloyd’s of London Dive-In Festival in Columbus, Ohio, further advancing the conversation around inclusion in the industry.

Omar maintains a strong connection to Howard University as a member of the Center for Insurance Education Advisory Board, where he contributes to advancing actuarial science and risk management curricula, expanding opportunities for students, and planning the annual Finance, Insurance, and Risk Management Symposium. His efforts have earned him the Maximillian Wallach Most Outstanding Student Award twice from Howard University, along with several national recognitions, including the 2016 National African-American Insurance Association’s Jerald L. Tillman Endowed Scholarship, the Gamma Iota Sigma Warren L. Weeks Leadership Award, and the Griffith Education Foundation’s Elizabeth A. Kocur Scholarship.

Omar’s dedication extends internationally; he was recognized as a Young African Leadership Initiative (YAALI) Fellow and traveled to South Africa to explore the country’s regulatory environment and its impact on various demographics. In all his endeavors, Omar remains guided by the belief that “if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.
